Guilt / Atonement. The theme of guilt, forgiveness, and atonement should be extremely obvious to anyone who reads the book. The entire plot of the novel centers on a woman who devotes her entire life repenting a crime she committed while still a young girl.

McKnight’s work shows how each model of atonement theology has a biblical basis and a rightful place in discussions about the meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection. If you ever tire of seeing the beauty of the atonement mired in abstract theological debate, you 2001-09-22 2002-03-07 "Atonement" is a book written in three major parts, with a final denouement from the author. Part One tells the story of one day/night in 1935 at the Tallis family estate north of London, England. It focuses on Briony Tallis , the thirteen-year-old youngest daughter of three, who aspires to be a writer. This haunting novel, which just failed to win the Booker this year, is at once McEwan at his most closely observed and psychologically penetrating, and his most sweeping and expansive.

Ian McEwan does admittedly take his time a bit at the beginning, painstakingly recounting a hot summer’s day where a young child, Briony, is forcing her cousins to perform a play. This one day takes up about a third of the book.

In Atonement, Ian McEwan has written a marvelous book. We peer deep into the workings of characters--their psychologies are rich and complex, their motivations too developed to fit neatly together. The book triumphs in its portrayal of the mind of a thirteen year old girl--an accomplished feat, considering the gender and age of the author! This sweeping English drama, based on the book by Ian McEwan, follows the lives of young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) Audience Reviews for Atonement.
